About the Item

Yuki is a Japanese fashion designer based in London. Like many fashion designers of his generation he is originally an architect, having trained at the Architecture Art Institute of Chicago before pursuing fashion design studies at the London College of fashion, from where he graduated in 1966. He worked with Louis Feraud, Norman Hartnell and Pierre Cardin before opening his fashion house in 1973. Best known for his dramatic eveningwear, frequently draped and pleated and designed to fall away from the body. Yuki is discreet with a powerful influence on high-end-fashion. His “Grecian” gowns gained him a clientele of celebrities and chic women. In 1986 Yuki was commissioned to create the dress Diana Princess of Wales wore for her state visit to Japan for a dinner with Emperor Hirohito. This showstopper evening dress, a symbolic sculpture in pleats, is similar to the original gown Princess Diana wore in 1986. Constructed from a stunning sapphire blue pleated polyester material. The gown features draped and pleated front and back and voluminous batwing arms gathered at the waistline with a large pleated button. Embellished with iridescent turquoise paillettes in a V-neck shape from neckline to the waist and repeated to decorate the open back. The skirt, constructed from perpendicular pleating, is slim. Fastening is with a long metal zip on the side. This covetable finely pleated Yuki gown evokes the calm, classically inspired work of the celebrated 1930s French designer, Madame Grès.
